LH Launches Regional Customized Design Competition Through Storytelling

LH Launches Regional Customized Design Competition Through Storytelling Creative Story Keyword Structure of Gyeongsan Daelim District (Provided by LH)

[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) is launching a new style of housing design competition. The competition will be based on a diverse participatory planning process tailored to humanities, local areas, and people.

On the 9th, LH announced that it will conduct a "region-customized apartment design competition" targeting six blocks in the Gyeongsan Daeim public housing district. The six blocks include A-5 to A-9 blocks and B-1 block within the district, totaling 3,632 households. The design fee is 16.3 billion KRW, and considering the purpose and difficulty of the competition and to encourage sufficient communication, it will proceed with two consortium groups.

The method of this competition started from the problem that our apartments have so far been supplied in a uniform form from the perspective of the client, regardless of region or demand. Accordingly, LH formed a project collaboration team with various stakeholders who share this awareness of the problem, aiming to "realize residential complexes where the stories of the region flow," and is conducting a new style of design competition.

This competition is conducted by first presenting architectural motifs in advance through "region-customized materials" prepared after multiple discussions since March with a collaboration team composed of experts in local specialties, cultural assets, storytelling, architecture, and residents, and then organically implementing the elements in the materials into physical spaces.

In particular, six characters with realistic concerns based in the Gyeongsan Daeim district travel through the "Gate of Time" to create an omnibus-style creative narrative mediated by the identity of the region. Based on this, six keywords are presented by harmonizing spatial and regional elements, thereby inducing creative alternatives that reflect the unique characteristics of the region in architecture.

To help understand this competition, LH will hold a public briefing session on the 16th at the LH Gyeonggi Regional Headquarters in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, and plans to announce the competition on the 17th.

Afterward, submissions will be accepted in September, and the winning entries will be selected through judging by the jury members. The juries divided by consortium groups are chaired by Park Sang-yong, Head of LH Technical Review Department. Group 1 includes Seo Kyu-deok (Kangwon National University), Sung Yi-yong (Dong-A University), Kim Gil-sang (Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation), Jeong Tae-yong (Konkuk University), Shim Kyu-young (Chungbuk National University), Lim Jae-young and Kim Nam-hoon (LH). Group 2 includes Lee Kyu-il (Samyook University), Lee Tae-young (Incheon National University), Lee Cheol-myeong (Korea Expressway Corporation), Kim Ki-yeon (Inje University), Kim Young-seok (Chungnam National University), Jeong Gwang-wook and Kang Byung-jik (LH).

After selecting the winning design, LH plans to finalize the design by reflecting the opinions of the collaboration team. All processes and results will be shared with residents, local community members, and project participants in formats such as storybooks and video clips.

Kwon Hyuk-rye, Head of LH Public Housing Headquarters, said, "This competition is an experimental method attempted for the first time in the industry," adding, "By embedding various stories into the existing uniform residential spaces and breathing life into them, it will be a good opportunity to strengthen our memories and elevate the level of apartment design to the next stage."
