Park Geun-hye Does Not Express Intention for Leave... Unlikely to Visit Half-Sister's Funeral

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Former President Park Geun-hye, who was imprisoned and indicted for the state corruption scandal, is unlikely to attend the funeral of Park Jae-ok, the eldest daughter of former President Park Chung-hee, who passed away on the 8th.

According to correctional authorities, former President Park learned of her half-sister Park's death while incarcerated at Seoul Detention Center that morning but did not express any particular intention regarding leave.

Leave is a system where an inmate serving a sentence is granted a temporary furlough to go out and then returns to the correctional facility.

It is reported that former President Park's side has not applied for a suspension of execution of the sentence so far.

Former President Park was detained on March 31, 2017, and has been imprisoned for 3 years and 3 months. She was sentenced to 2 years in prison for interfering in the old Saenuri Party's nomination process, and the retrial for the state corruption scandal and the National Intelligence Service special activity funds bribery case is ongoing. The prosecution has demanded a combined sentence of 35 years for the two cases, and the sentencing hearing will be held on the 10th.
