Emphasizing the Unfairness of Military Airport Relocation and Hindrance to Regional Development Through Joint Statement

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] On the 8th, civic groups from Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do and Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do announced a joint statement at the National Assembly Communication Hall urging the withdrawal of the amendment to the "Special Act on Military Airport Relocation."
Present at the event were National Assembly members Seo Sam-seok (Muan-Yeongam-Sinan), Song Ok-ju (Hwaseong Gap), Lee Won-wook (Hwaseong Eul), Kim Dae-hyun, chairman of Muan-gun, Park Seong-jae, chairman of the Special Committee Against the Relocation of Gwangju Military Airport to Muan of the Muan County Council, Park Yeon-sook, chairman of the Special Committee Against the Relocation of Suwon Military Airport to Hwaseong of the Hwaseong City Council, Mo Jong-guk, standing chairman of the Anti-Relocation National Countermeasure Committee for the Combat Airfield to Muan, Hong Jin-seon, standing chairman of the Anti-Relocation Civic Countermeasure Committee for the Combat Airfield to Hwaseong, and about 60 members of civilian organizations sharing the opposition to the relocation.
The attendees emphasized the unfairness of the military airport relocation that forces unilateral sacrifice on residents and the hindrance to regional development through the statement, strongly demanding the withdrawal of the amendment to the special act.
Park Seong-jae, chairman of the Military Airport Special Committee of the Muan County Council, said, "The military airport relocation project has a significant negative impact on residents and contains various conflict factors," adding, "The National Assembly must withdraw the amendment to the special act, which goes against the spirit of representative democracy and causes hasty administration."
Following this, Mo Jong-guk, standing chairman of the Muan Countermeasure Committee, stated, "The Special Act on Military Airport Relocation is a selfish and bad law created not for strengthening national defense but only to resolve complaints such as noise damage from the previous site local governments," and expressed determination by saying, "Muan-gun and Hwaseong-si will join forces to block the amendment to the special act."
Taking this joint statement announcement as an opportunity, Muan-gun and Hwaseong-si formed a consensus that the military airport relocation must be stopped to protect the region and decided to jointly promote activities to block the military airport relocation in the future.
