[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyun-joo] Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hye expressed deep condolences on the 8th for Choi Sook-hyun, a triathlon athlete who made an extreme choice, stating, "We promise the bereaved family a thorough investigation into the truth."
On the same day, Deputy Prime Minister Yoo presided over the 9th Social Relations Ministers' Meeting for the Realization of an Inclusive Nation at the Government Sejong Complex, emphasizing, "Despite many efforts centered on the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, harsh acts occurring in some parts of the sports community have not yet been eradicated, causing public outrage," and added, "Related agencies, led by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, must ensure that such incidents never happen again." She also expressed her intention to prepare related policies through the Social Relations Ministers' Meeting.
At the meeting, the reform plan for the 'Demand-Centered Disability Support System,' introduced after the abolition of the disability grading system last year, was discussed, along with a discussion on social policy directions to realize an equal society.
Deputy Prime Minister Yoo stated, "We will improve comprehensive surveys so that people with the most severe disabilities, who find daily life very difficult, can receive more support," and added, "We will also address the introduction plan for comprehensive surveys in the field of mobility support for the disabled."
Furthermore, she said, "As we prepare for the post-COVID-19 era and establish future policies, now is the most appropriate time to review our social policy directions to respond to the public's heightened 'sensitivity to discrimination,'" adding, "I hope the results of the discussions will be well reflected in actual policies and serve as a starting point to prevent discrimination arising from differences."
