[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun on the 8th ordered, "Each ministry, including local governments, should promptly identify the housing ownership status of high-ranking public officials, and take measures to ensure that those with multiple homes can sell them as soon as possible."
While presiding over the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters (CDSCH) meeting on the response to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) held at the Government Seoul Office, Prime Minister Chung said, "Public opinion has been very unfavorable recently due to real estate issues, and although the government is striving to come up with countermeasures, if high-ranking public officials own multiple houses, it will be difficult to gain the trust of the people regardless of the policies introduced. All efforts may be in vain."
Prime Minister Chung added, "This is not a situation that will quickly pass with time," and said, "It is a serious situation that requires high-ranking public officials to set an example. In fact, I believe that time has already passed."
He also urged, "The government must respond sensitively to whatever the people demand and provide answers accordingly," and emphasized, "Let us share this understanding and prepare and be ready with the best policies from each standpoint."
