[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Min Jun-young] Singer Yang Joon-il clarified rumors regarding his divorce, remarriage, and daughter.
On the 7th, MBC Every1's entertainment program 'Video Star' featured Yang Joon-il along with Solji, Gong Min-ji, Ahn Ye-eun, and Jamie.
During the broadcast, Yang Joon-il opened up about the suspicions surrounding him, saying, "I think fame is a tax you have to pay once you become famous. But the people related to me don’t need to pay that tax. That’s why I didn’t talk about it."
Regarding his past marriage, he said, "Yes, I was married before. Everyone around me knows about my past marriage, so how could I lie or hide it?" He added, "I got married in Korea and lived in Korea, so everyone around me knows this fact."
He continued, "But I heard my ex-wife gave an interview. I wanted to protect her, but if she wanted to talk, that is her choice." He explained, "Of course, I told my current wife about my past marriage. My wife is someone who will share my life, so how could I build a relationship on lies?"
When asked if he had a daughter with his ex-wife, Yang Joon-il denied it.
He said, "We separated in 2000. I heard the daughter is now a high school student, but if she were mine, she would be at least over 20 years old. I did not have a child with her." He added, "My ex-wife married someone else and had a daughter."
Regarding why he had not addressed the controversy until now, he said, "I didn’t feel the need to go and explain in detail to people who didn’t even ask." He added, "Rather, fans were not curious and told me things like 'Don’t be shaken' and 'It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve been married, oppa.'"
Earlier last month, a post spread mainly on online communities claiming, "Yang Joon-il secretly has a daughter who is a high school student, and his first wife, whom he divorced, is in Guam."
In response, Yang Joon-il’s side stated, "All rumors about divorce and remarriage are groundless." They added, "Since the post was voluntarily deleted, we will not pursue the matter further, but we will consider how to respond in the future."
However, controversy arose when a woman claiming to be Yang Joon-il’s first wife appeared on a YouTube channel, asserting, "I registered our marriage in Korea around 1997-1998 and got married, but we divorced about three years later in Guam."
Afterwards, Yang Joon-il conveyed his position on Kakao Project 100, where he communicates with fans, 'A Daily Soulful Word with Yang Joon-il,' saying, "Being kind does not mean being weak. Being quiet does not mean having nothing to say."
