[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Min Jun-young] A man in his 60s who wielded a weapon after feeling disrespected by a drinking companion he had just met was arrested by the police.
The Jinhae Police Station in Gyeongnam announced on the 7th that they have detained and are investigating a 61-year-old ethnic Korean Chinese man, A, on suspicion of attempted murder.
A is accused of stabbing a fellow ethnic Korean Chinese man in his 50s, B, twice with a weapon in front of a convenience store in Yongwon-dong, Jinhae-gu, Changwon City, at around 6:35 p.m. on the 5th while they were drinking together.
It is reported that A committed the crime after B, who was drinking with him, told him "It's time to stop now" in a manner that A perceived as disrespectful, prompting A to bring a weapon from his home and carry out the attack.
B sustained a wound to his side and was taken to the hospital, but his life is not in danger.
According to the police investigation, the two men were strangers. A reportedly overheard B and four others drinking and speaking in Chinese while passing by the convenience store, assumed they were fellow ethnic Koreans, and joined them for drinks before committing the crime.
The police are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
