[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] On the 7th, Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it has created a ‘Green Pocket Forest’ imbued with the spirits of patriotic martyrs and national heroes by utilizing hidden leftover land within the site of the Veterans Hall building.
The county created the Green Pocket Forest recognizing the need for a resting place for users of the Veterans Hall, following the long-awaited project of building the Gokseong Veterans Hall for national merit recipients and their families.
The main planted species in the Veterans Hall Green Pocket Forest include 60 trees of 7 species such as Hibiscus syriacus, which blooms brilliantly for 100 days, and pine trees; 3,383 shrubs of 4 species including Buddleja; and 7,170 herbaceous plants.
In addition, with the rearrangement of existing trees, various flowers and trees can be seen throughout the four seasons: Cornus officinalis, cherry trees, and Spiraea in spring; crape myrtle, Hibiscus syriacus, and hydrangea in summer and autumn; and pine trees in winter. This is expected to provide forest welfare services and serve as a green resting place for Veterans Hall users.
Recently, the need for forests has emerged amid rapidly changing environmental conditions such as fine dust and increased summer heat waves.
In particular, demand for green resting places has steadily increased as a measure to ease restrictions on outdoor activities due to the spread of COVID-19.
Gokseong-gun is separately establishing a management plan for the creation and maintenance of urban forests such as the Gokseong urban forest to build a green network in Gokseong, alongside the 2020 urban forest creation project.
As a result, in 2021, five projects including a fine dust blocking forest were selected in the urban forest creation contest, securing 4.5 billion KRW in project funds, accelerating various forest creation projects.
A county official stated, “We will strive to systematically build Gokseong’s green network to live together with forests and make Gokseong the happiest place ranked number one in happiness index.”
