President Moon: "Thorough Investigation of Athlete Abuse, Appropriate Punishment Must Follow" (Update)

State Council Criticizes Athlete Assault Case as 'Relic of a Bygone Era'... "Medals Are Not the Highest Value. Performance Is Not More Important Than Athlete Happiness"

[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in stated at the Cabinet meeting on the 7th, "The recent assault incident in the sports community has caused great public outrage. It is very regrettable and heartbreaking that an athlete, who should be loved by all, was driven to an extreme choice. I extend my deepest condolences to the deceased athlete and their bereaved family."

President Moon emphasized, "Such unfortunate incidents must never be repeated. Thorough investigations must be conducted, followed by appropriate punishment and accountability."

President Moon pointed out, "Harsh treatment and assault against athletes are relics of an outdated era that cannot be justified by any words. The sports community must break away from the old and backward practices that have been traditionally continued."

President Moon said, "Awareness and culture must change first. Medals are not the highest value. Performance is not more important than the happiness of the athlete," adding, "Athletes should be able to enjoy their competitions. The sweat they shed for self-overcoming is beautiful. However, if harsh treatment and assault accompany training, even winning a medal cannot be considered a valuable achievement."

President Moon pointed out, "If it is true that the victim sought help from the police, the association, the Korean Sports Council, and Gyeongju City Hall but could not receive proper assistance anywhere, this is an issue that must be thoroughly addressed."

President Moon stated, "No matter how plausible the laws and systems for sports human rights are, they are useless if they do not function on the ground," and urged, "Relevant ministries should conduct a thorough investigation of this incident and promptly prepare practical measures to prevent recurrence together with the sports community. Please also broadly examine whether there are similar cases."
