[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Dongseo University’s ‘Sejong Institute,’ established to spread Hangul and Korean culture in the United States, is making its debut.

Before entering the U.S. market, Dongseo University has established and operated Sejong Institutes in Vilnius, Lithuania; Astrakhan, Russia; and Surabaya, Indonesia, receiving favorable reviews from local students.

Dongseo University received approval to establish a Sejong Institute in the United States through the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Sejong Institute Foundation’s ‘2020 New Sejong Institute Designation Review.’

The newly approved U.S. Sejong Institute is a joint project applied for by Dongseo University and St. Mary University in Texas.

Jang Je-guk, president of Dongseo University, said, “I am very pleased that a Sejong Institute has been established on the U.S. mainland. Dongseo University will continue to do its best to promote Hangul and Korean culture overseas. I thank Professor Seongbae Lim of St. Mary University, who will take charge of the institute, for working together with us.”

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism approved the establishment of 34 Sejong Institutes in 30 countries this year, including Denmark, Sweden, Armenia, and Georgia.

The Sejong Institute is an overseas Korean language and culture education institution established by law by the government in response to the rapidly increasing demand for Korean language education due to the spread of Hallyu, the increase in international marriages, and the overseas expansion of Korean companies.
