[Asia Economy Reporter Bu Aeri] Melon, operated by Kakao, has abolished the existing 1-hour based aggregation method.
Through an update on the 6th, Melon changed the existing ranking chart, which aggregated play counts on an hourly basis, to a 24-hour based aggregation method called '24Hits.' The previous 1-hour unit chart was criticized for being prone to so-called 'music manipulation.'
The 24-hour aggregation method counts the number of times a single person plays a song once per song within the most recent 24 hours and updates every hour.
The ranking displayed next to the title, ranking fluctuation indicators, and real-time change graphs have been removed.
Melon stated, "By removing ranking displays and changing the aggregation criteria, we aim to reduce immersion in ranking competition and fulfill the chart’s original role of showing other users’ interests through statistics and discovering trends."
Melon also introduced a personalized chart called 'My 24Hits.' This feature analyzes individual user history and introduces 100 songs that the user might like among the most frequently used music on Melon.
The chart’s music playback method adopts 'shuffle play' by default, rather than playing in ranking order.
A Kakao official said, "To implement Melon’s changes, we have listened to and reflected the opinions of users and stakeholders within the industry," adding, "We will continue to enhance accessibility and convenience with improved functions and services, providing expanded opportunities and enjoyment for music listening."
