Busan Port Logistics System Invests 14.2 Billion Won to Promote 'Unmanned Smartization'

Busan City Secures 5.7 Billion KRW in National Funding for Intelligent Smart Logistics System Development

Busan Port Logistics System Invests 14.2 Billion Won to Promote 'Unmanned Smartization' Busan Port Smart Logistics System Promotion Framework.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A project to transform port logistics into an unmanned automated smart system is being promoted at Busan Port.

Busan City announced on the 6th that the "Intelligent Unmanned Automated Smart Logistics System Construction" project was selected in the "Science and Technology Project Opening the Future of the Region" contest hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, and will promote the development of core and commercialization technologies over the next five years.

The project is scheduled to be carried out over five years with a total budget of 14.28 billion KRW (5.7 billion KRW from the national government, 5.7 billion KRW from local government, and 2.88 billion KRW from private sector contributions), and will be operated by nine companies including Busan Port Authority.

The selected "Intelligent Unmanned Automated Smart Logistics System Construction" project received high scores in the evaluation process as it aligned with the Ministry of Science and ICT's project promotion direction, including customized technology development for regional demand, linkage with industrial promotion, specificity of project content, and the composition of a regional consortium.

With participation from Busan Port Authority and others, the project will promote the development of core sensor localization technology for autonomous driving equipment within Busan Port, development of remote control and unmanned automation technology for logistics equipment in logistics centers, and technology development such as a cargo control and integrated operation platform based on blockchain and LPWA (Low Power Wide Area) communication technology centered on large logistics hubs in the Busan area.

Busan Port Authority will not only focus on technology development but also promote demonstration projects applying the technology to actual port sites.

The effect of this project is to proactively respond to the digital paradigm shift in the logistics sector, including the spread of the 4th Industrial Revolution. By integrating advanced technologies such as ICT into Busan Port container terminals and logistics centers in port hinterlands, productivity will be increased and costs reduced. It is also expected to contribute to the prevention of safety accidents.

Byun Sung-wan, Acting Mayor of Busan, said, "Through this project, we will actively support the local logistics industry, which has suffered stagnation due to COVID-19, to create a new opportunity for revival."
