[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] In Tokyo, the capital of Japan, the number of new COVID-19 cases has remained in the triple digits for four consecutive days as of the 5th.

NHK reported, citing Tokyo metropolitan officials, that "111 new COVID-19 infections were confirmed in the metropolitan area," bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 6,765.

The daily number of new COVID-19 cases in Tokyo had sharply decreased after recording 206 cases on April 17 and 165 cases on May 1, dropping to as low as 2 cases on May 23.

Accordingly, the Japanese government fully lifted the COVID-19 related "state of emergency" on May 25, ending it for Tokyo and five other major regional governments. However, cluster infections continued to be reported in entertainment districts and hospitals within Tokyo.

As a result, the daily number of new COVID-19 cases in Tokyo increased again to 55 on the 24th of last month, and since the 2nd of this month, the number of confirmed cases has consistently remained in the triple digits.

In response, Tokyo authorities are urging residents to refrain from unnecessary travel to other regions and to exercise caution against virus infection when using entertainment districts.
