[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] On the 4th, Japan reported 262 new cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

According to Kyodo News and NHK, as of 9 PM that day, the total number of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases across Japan was 262, including 131 in Tokyo, marking the highest number in 63 days since May 2, when the state of emergency was in effect (304 cases). This is the second consecutive day that the daily new infections in Japan have exceeded 200 since the state of emergency was lifted, following 236 cases the previous day.

The daily new infections in Japan peaked in mid-April and then declined, leading to the nationwide lifting of the state of emergency, which restricted social and economic activities, on May 25. However, from mid-June, the trend reversed and the number rose to the 100s by late June, eventually reaching the 200s starting the day before.

As a result, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in Japan increased to 20,314, including 6,654 in Tokyo. The number of deaths remains unchanged from the previous day at 990 as of that day.
