[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] As confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) rapidly increase in Gwangju, health authorities believe that after the first infection occurred at Gwangneuksa Temple, exposure spread to multiple groups through the Geumyang Building.

Jung Eun-kyung, head of the Central Disease Control Headquarters, said at a regular briefing held on the 3rd in Osong, Chungbuk, "We believe that the outbreak in Gwangju started with the first infection at Gwangneuksa Temple and then spread to multiple groups via the Geumyang Building."

Health authorities estimate that the infection initially occurring at Gwangneuksa Temple spread through the Geumyang Building to travel groups, churches, nursing homes, and others. Head Jung explained, "After visitors to the Geumyang Building went on a trip to Jeju Island, another cluster infection occurred. We also believe that the spread intensified through visitors to the Geumyang Building who attended church or worked at nursing homes."

The number of confirmed cases related to Gwangneuksa Temple in Gwangju increased by 8 on this day, totaling 57. The additional confirmed cases include 4 related to Hanul Nursing Home, 2 related to the Geumyang Building, and 2 contacts related to Sarang Church.

Head Jung stated, "Infections within the Gwangju area are leading to various exposures," and added, "We are conducting detailed investigations into the infection routes and the process of introduction."
