[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in South Korea increased by 63 on the 3rd.


The Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) announced that as of midnight on that day, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose by 63 from the previous day’s midnight to 12,967.


The daily new confirmed cases recorded 113 over the weekend (51 cases) and holiday (62 cases), showing the largest increase since April 4-5, when there were 175 cases. However, the numbers had dropped to the low 40s on the 29th and 30th of last month, then rose to the 50s on the 1st and 2nd, and reached the 60s on this day.


Among the newly confirmed 63 cases, 52 were locally transmitted and 11 were imported. Of the local cases, 12 were in Seoul, 1 in Incheon, and 16 in Gyeonggi Province, totaling 29 cases in the metropolitan area. Additionally, 10 cases were confirmed in Daegu, 6 in Gwangju, 4 in Daejeon, and 1 each in Chungnam, Jeonbuk, and Gyeongbuk.


Among the 11 imported cases, 4 were detected during quarantine. The remaining cases were confirmed after entry in Daegu (3), Gyeonggi Province (2), and Gyeongnam Province (2).


Combining local and imported cases, the metropolitan area accounts for a total of 31 cases. New confirmed cases were reported in 10 cities and provinces nationwide, including the metropolitan area.


The number of patients who have recovered and been released from isolation reached 11,759, an increase of 75 from the previous day. The death toll remained unchanged at 282.
