Gangnam-gu Intensively Identifies At-Risk Households in Welfare Blind Spots Amid Heatwave Preparedness

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jeong Soon-gyun) will focus on identifying and supporting vulnerable households struggling due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic or susceptible to heatwaves until the end of August during the summer season.

The target households total 21,677, including Seoul Metropolitan Government disaster emergency living expense recipients: ▲ 4,999 single middle-aged households aged 50-64 ▲ 14,514 households with no household income ▲ 1,884 households living in semi-basement units ▲ 280 unemployed daily workers facing crises such as electricity arrears or financial delinquency.

After in-depth consultations, the district will provide emergency welfare support ranging from 300,000 to 1,000,000 KRW per household, and for heatwave-vulnerable households such as those in semi-basements, cooling supplies like air conditioners, cool mats, and fans will be distributed.

Additionally, welfare planners, our neighborhood care teams, and welfare community leaders will promote the program door-to-door, while non-face-to-face identification efforts will be strengthened through text messages, phone calls, and the KakaoTalk channel ‘Gangnam Joeun Iut’ (Gangnam Good Neighbor).

Furthermore, starting from the 1st, the district is delivering one summer scarf and ten dental masks to 558 low-income vulnerable elderly individuals.

Gangnam-gu is leading the realization of a dense social welfare network by establishing cooperative systems with local public institutions such as the Employment Welfare Plus Center, Gangnam and Suseo Police Stations, and Seoul Gangnam Post Office, following a business agreement signed last month with Gangnam, Yeoksam, and Samsung Tax Offices.
