[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Amid the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), a cluster of COVID-19 infections recently occurred in India.

According to local media such as the Hindustan Times on the 1st, in Bihar state in northern India, a groom suspected of being infected after a wedding on the 15th of last month died of high fever, and about 100 wedding guests and residents tested positive for COVID-19.

Two weeks ago in a rural area called Patna, a groom showed symptoms of high fever and died two days after the wedding. The body was cremated without testing for COVID-19 infection.

The Hindustan Times reported that the groom complained of high fever on the wedding day and wanted to postpone the ceremony, but the wedding was held under pressure from his family.

Also, about 100 wedding guests and residents tested positive for COVID-19.

Indian authorities immediately conducted tests on people who attended the wedding, revealing that 15 relatives of the groom were infected.

Subsequent testing expanded to surrounding villages, and among 364 residents tested, 86 were confirmed positive.

The authorities issued a control order in the area and implemented intensive quarantine measures.

Meanwhile, in India, the number of confirmed cases surged recently as COVID-19 related lockdown measures were significantly eased to revive the economy.

The daily new confirmed cases, which were around 8,000 at the end of May, have recently increased to between 18,000 and 19,000.

On the 30th of last month, India’s total number of COVID-19 confirmed cases reached 566,840, an increase of 18,522 from the previous day.
