[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Samsung Electronics will recruit more than 1,000 master's and doctoral-level personnel, the largest number ever, by the end of this year in future business areas such as system semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Samsung Electronics announced on the 1st that it hired about 500 PhD-level personnel in semiconductor design and artificial intelligence (AI) fields in the first half of this year alone, and plans to hire a total of about 1,000 master's and doctoral personnel by the end of this year.

Samsung Electronics explained that actively securing outstanding talent in future business areas is due to its management philosophy that 'people' are the most important to overcome crises such as ▲changes in the global trade order ▲intensified competition in the IT industry ▲the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and to pioneer the future.

Last month, Samsung Electronics appointed Sebastian Seung (Seung Hyun-joon), a world-renowned scholar in the AI field and a professor at Princeton University in the United States, as the head (president) of Samsung Research, Samsung Electronics' integrated research organization, to strengthen AI technology and advance business strategies.

Samsung Electronics is accelerating its future preparations by significantly expanding the recruitment of core talents in next-generation new technology fields such as system semiconductors, AI, and software.

Previously, Samsung announced an investment plan worth 180 trillion won in 2018 and selected AI, 5G, and automotive semiconductors as future growth businesses to focus on nurturing them. Then, in April last year, it announced the 'Semiconductor Vision 2030,' investing 133 trillion won in the system semiconductor field and hiring 15,000 people.

In March this year, Samsung Electronics announced through the DS division recruitment notice that it would recruit outstanding talents in various fields such as ▲memory research and development to strengthen next-generation memory leadership ▲design and process fields to secure system semiconductor competitiveness ▲implementation of smart factories in semiconductor production lines ▲core AI and software in the era of the 4th industrial revolution.

Moreover, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong emphasized in a public apology in May that "only top-level management with expertise and insight can guarantee survival," and "Samsung must continue to recruit excellent talent regardless of gender, academic background, or nationality."
