"Reducing Fine Dust by Combining Moss with IoT"

[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH Corporation) announced on the 1st that it has developed the 'SH Smart Moss Tower,' a fine dust reduction solution within the city, as part of building a citizen-experience-oriented smart city. The patent application was also completed on the 19th of last month.

The SH Smart Moss Tower is a cloud-based solution that combines the characteristics of plants capable of absorbing pollutants generated in the urban environment with Internet of Things (IoT) technology. An SH Corporation official stated, "Moss is known to be excellent at cooling the surrounding environment while purifying nitrogen oxides, ozone, and particulate matter in the air," adding, "We expect even greater effects from the Smart Moss Tower."

Designed in a cylindrical shape about 2 meters tall, the SH Smart Moss Tower is engineered to increase the fine dust adsorption rate within approximately 50 meters around it by utilizing moss and wind, thereby enhancing air purification efficiency. A ventilation fan is installed at the upper inside of the cylinder to maximize the effect.

Additionally, an automatic watering system supplies the moisture needed for the moss, linked to real-time climate information to operate watering accordingly. Furthermore, real-time information from the smart fine dust reduction moss tower system is managed based on the cloud, and it is designed to allow remote automatic control via the smart city operation center and smartphone apps.

Kim Seyong, President of SH Corporation, said, "Going forward, SH Smart City will not simply showcase existing technologies but will enable Seoul citizens to directly experience and enjoy the benefits of the services."
