[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] Huons announced on the 1st that it has completed the domestic Phase 3 clinical trial of its self-developed dry eye syndrome treatment, the nano-composite eye drop (HU-007), and has applied for product approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
The nano-composite eye drop (HU-007) is an improved new drug designed to rapidly improve dry eye symptoms by combining cyclosporine, which has anti-inflammatory effects, and trehalose, which protects the tear film, in the dry eye treatment field where only single-agent treatments such as cyclosporine and hyaluronic acid exist. Through nanoparticulation below 20nm, it reduced the amount of cyclosporine used to less than half compared to existing cyclosporine monotherapy while showing non-inferior anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, it does not require shaking before instillation and causes less irritation such as burning sensation during application, making it convenient to use.
Since May last year, Huons has confirmed the safety, efficacy, and excellent tolerability of the nano-composite eye drop (HU-007) through combined treatment effects of tear film protection and anti-inflammation in 216 dry eye patients at six major domestic hospitals including Bundang Seoul National University Hospital.
As multifactorial ophthalmic diseases caused by environmental factors such as smartphone use and fine dust are rapidly increasing, the demand for diversification of dry eye treatments is also rising. The company expects this new drug to satisfy both medical professionals and patients.
Um Ki-an, CEO of Huons, said, “Dry eye syndrome is one of the most common eye diseases experienced by modern people, but treatment options have been limited due to the scarcity of effective therapies. We will quickly obtain approval for the nano-composite eye drop (HU-007), developed with the goal of improving public health, and introduce it to the domestic market within this year.”
