Dobong-gu Creates Traditional Market Free of Cigarette Smoke

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dobong-gu (Mayor Dongjin Lee) has designated the walkways of traditional markets ‘Banghak-dong Dokkaebi Market’, ‘Chang-dong Sinchang Market’, and ‘Chang-dong Alley Market’ as non-smoking areas starting from the 1st, creating smoke-free traditional markets.

This non-smoking market designation was made by gathering opinions from the market merchants' association, and smoking is prohibited for everyone on the walkways of the non-smoking markets.

Accordingly, after a three-month promotion and guidance period for the designated non-smoking areas in traditional markets until September 30, from October 1, smoking in the non-smoking areas will be strictly enforced, and violators will be fined 100,000 KRW.

So far, the district has established 632 non-smoking areas in places such as parks, bus stops, and streets, managing a total of 6,288 non-smoking areas, making efforts to protect the health of residents from cigarette smoke.

In particular, the non-smoking areas have been expanded to include ▲ 272 locations near kindergartens and daycare centers and school routes for Sindobong Middle School, Baegun Elementary School, and Bukseoul Middle School in 2018 ▲ Banghak Sagye Plaza in 2019 ▲ and the school route of Munhwa High School in 2020.

Mayor Dongjin Lee of Dobong-gu stated, “The designation of non-smoking areas in traditional markets is expected to greatly contribute not only to the convenience of residents using the traditional markets but also to the improvement of the market environment.” He added, “Going forward, we will gradually expand non-smoking areas such as elementary school routes to protect residents’ health from cigarette smoke and create a pleasant environment.”
