[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin Citizen Sports Park in Gyeonggi-do will be renamed 'Yongin Mireu Stadium.'
Yongin City announced on the 30th that the name of Yongin Citizen Sports Park in Samga-dong, Cheoin-gu, completed in January 2018, has been finalized as 'Yongin Mireu Stadium' through a public contest.
'Mireu' is a pure Korean word meaning the dragon (용, 龍) of Yongin, and 'Mireu Stadium' reflects the design of the main stadium, which is shaped like a soaring dragon.
The city initially promoted and operated the project under the name 'Yongin Citizen Sports Park,' but due to concerns that the term 'park' and the distance between facilities caused confusion among citizens, it has been pushing for a name change.
After a 12-day public contest and survey, the final name was selected by a review committee composed of experts based on five criteria including representativeness and creativity.
Following the name change, the city plans to replace various signs and strengthen publicity targeting citizens.
Baek Gun-gi, mayor of Yongin City, expressed expectations, saying, "'Yongin Mireu Stadium' will become the nation's top comprehensive stadium where sports and culture coexist, hosting not only A matches but also various cultural performances."
