"Sokcho, Continuous Rain May Update Precipitation Records"
Strong East Winds from Low Pressure Collide with Baekdudaegan
Topographical Factors Cause Development of Rain Cloud Bands
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] On the 30th, the daily rainfall in June in Gangneung and Sokcho, Gangwon Province, recorded the highest amount ever.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 3 p.m. that day, the daily rainfall in Gangneung was 206.0 mm, the highest daily rainfall in June since observations began in 1911. The second highest was 160.4 mm on June 28, 1953.
In Sokcho, the rainfall was 175.9 mm, surpassing the previous record of 174.5 mm on June 18, 1996. Since observations began in 1968, this is the highest daily rainfall in June. Rain continues in Sokcho, so the record for the highest rainfall is expected to be updated.
Gangwon Yeongdong is located north of the path where a low-pressure system developed along the stationary front moves toward the East Sea. Strong east winds caused by the low pressure collided with the Baekdudaegan mountain range, developing a strong rain cloud band. In particular, Seoraksan and Misi-ryeong in the northern mountainous area of Gangwon recorded over 250 mm of rain by 3 p.m.
The rain is expected to continue until tomorrow morning.
