Naju City Announces '7 Major Leading Projects'


[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Kang In-gyu) announced on the 30th the launch of seven leading projects to build the "Central City of Honam" in celebration of the 2nd anniversary of the 7th local government.


Mayor Kang first cited the major achievements in the first half of the 7th local government, including ▲promotion of the 1000th anniversary project of Jeollado's naming ▲declaration of the vision as the Energy Capital of Korea ▲attracting Korea Electric Power Corporation University ▲completion of 'Innovation City Season 1' through the relocation of 16 public institutions.


He also mentioned achievements in promoting universal welfare for all citizens to enjoy happiness together, such as ▲designation as a women-friendly city ▲joining the Child-Friendly City Local Government Council ▲certification of joining the World Health Organization (WHO) Age-Friendly City Network ▲designation as a lifelong learning city in Korea.


Achievements in history, culture, and food sectors were also introduced, including ▲completion of the restoration project of the four gates of Naju Fortress ▲urban regeneration new deal project for the old downtown ▲enactment of a special law on the maintenance of historical and cultural zones including the Mahan cultural area ▲establishment of the nation's first dedicated food department (Food Planning Division).


Mayor Kang announced the seven leading projects as the core vision for the second half of the 7th local government.


The seven leading projects are ▲establishment of a comprehensive plan for ecological restoration of the Yeongsan River ▲designation of Geumseongsan as a provincial park and certification as a global slow city ▲expansion of a circular metropolitan transportation network linking the Gwangju Urban Railway Line 2 project and the 'Naju-Gwangju Pyeongdong Station' ▲relocation of the Geumseongsan military unit and complete removal of buried landmines ▲preparation of a plan to relocate LG Chem Naju Plant within the jurisdiction ▲restoration of Mahan Temple and designation as a historical and cultural city ▲attracting the World Energy Expo.


Mayor Kang In-gyu said, "New attempts always come with difficulties, but we must move forward for a better life and development," and added, "I ask all 120,000 citizens to gather their wisdom and capabilities together so that Naju can leap forward again as the central city of Honam."
