Delivery and Naming Ceremony in Busan on the 30th
Passenger capacity of 638 and can carry 170 vehicles simultaneously
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 29th that it will hold the delivery and naming ceremony of the 'Sunrise Jeju' vessel, the third supported ship under the Coastal Vessel Modernization Fund, at Daesun Shipbuilding in Yeongdo-gu, Busan on the afternoon of the 30th. The Sunrise Jeju is scheduled to begin its first voyage from Yeosu Nokdong Port to Jeju Seongsanpo Port on the 13th of next month.
The Sunrise Jeju is the third outcome of the government's 'Coastal Vessel Modernization Fund' project aimed at enhancing the safety of coastal passenger ships. From 2018 to 2020, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries provided a loan covering 50% (23.8 billion KRW) of the construction cost (47.6 billion KRW) to H Shipping, the third recipient of the fund. The shipbuilding was undertaken by Daesun Shipbuilding, Korea's first private shipyard and a participant in the development of standard ferry vessel designs.
The Sunrise Jeju is a large ferry passenger ship with a passenger capacity of 638 and the ability to carry 170 vehicles simultaneously. Considering the characteristics of ferry ships that transport vehicles simultaneously, the Ministry expects passenger convenience and satisfaction to increase by providing various cabins such as a driver’s rest area and reclining seats for sleeping.
Previously, the Silver Cloud, built as the first vessel under the Coastal Vessel Modernization Fund, has been operating on the Wando-Jeju route since October 2018. The second vessel, Gold Stella, began operating on the Yeosu-Jeju route from the 29th.
Kim Jun-seok, Director of the Shipping and Logistics Bureau at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "We will further expand the scale of the fund to continuously support the construction of new passenger ships through the modernization fund and support the new construction of more coastal vessels."
