Added Rotating Bezel and Titanium Version for a More Classic Look
Improved Features with Blood Pressure and ECG Measurement Support
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Galaxy Watch3 is set to be released as a product that surpasses the limitations of smartwatches, equipped with a design comparable to luxury watches and health-related features.
According to industry sources on the 29th, the Galaxy Watch3 improves usability by adding a rotating bezel in addition to the existing buttons, allowing scrolling as well as touchscreen operation. In addition to stainless steel, a titanium version commonly used in regular watches will be newly introduced. It will be released in two sizes, 41mm and 45mm, with more diverse colors such as all-black, bronze, and silver.
As competition intensifies in introducing health measurement functions in smartwatches, Samsung Electronics will officially support blood pressure and electrocardiogram (ECG) measurement functions in Korea ahead of Apple. These functions are available not only on the Galaxy Watch3 but also on the Galaxy Watch Active2, released in August last year. The blood pressure measurement function is currently usable, and the ECG measurement function will be added in the third quarter. These two functions are additions to the existing heart rate and sleep monitoring features. To use the blood pressure measurement function, users can download the Samsung Health Monitor app from the Galaxy Store and input their blood pressure baseline values. However, it can only be used when paired with a Samsung smartphone. Samsung Electronics is preparing certifications to offer blood pressure and ECG functions in the U.S. and other countries as well.
The Galaxy Watch3 is expected to be equipped with eight photodiodes to assist heart rate measurement, a blood pressure monitor capable of measuring blood pressure and ECG, and a gyroscope sensor. The battery capacity will be similar to the previous model, with 247mAh and 340mAh depending on the watch size. It supports 1GB of RAM and 8GB of memory, which is twice the capacity of the previous model.
Samsung Electronics has been releasing smartwatch products once a year. In August 2018, alongside the Galaxy Note9, it unveiled the 'Galaxy Watch,' the successor to the Gear S3. In February 2019, it launched the 'Galaxy Watch Active' as part of its wearable lineup with the Galaxy S10, and in August of the same year, it released the 'Galaxy Watch Active2.'
According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, smartwatch sales in the first quarter of 2020 reached approximately 17.8 million units, a 25% increase compared to the same period last year. The actual number of smartwatch users this year is expected to exceed 150 million.
