[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] The Korea Tourism Organization and the Regional Tourism Organization Council, composed of seven regional tourism organizations (RTOs), announced on the 29th the selection of 100 nationwide "untact (contactless) tourist destinations" where people can enjoy domestic travel relatively comfortably and safely, avoiding the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
The selected tourist destinations include Baramsae Village Sopung Garden in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi; Beolyeong-ri Metasequoia Road in Yeongdeok, Gyeongbuk; Hanbat Arboretum in Daejeon; Hwangnyeongsan in Busan; Mongchontoseong in Seoul; Gyodongdo in Incheon; and Gosalli Forest Trail in Jeju. The regional tourism organizations reviewed criteria such as ▲tourist spots not well known previously ▲individual and family-themed tourist destinations ▲outdoor tourist spots ▲tourist destinations practicing social distancing through self-imposed visitor limits.
These tourist spots will be promoted in connection with the "2020 Special Travel Week," held from July 1 to 19. The council expects this to contribute to alleviating the concentration of tourists at some famous tourist spots during the peak summer travel season and to dispersing travel demand to some extent.
Jung Chang-wook, head of the National Tourism Strategy Team at the Korea Tourism Organization, said, "We will work with regional tourism organizations to establish safe travel as a new travel culture in the COVID-19 era," adding, "We will focus on not only establishing a culture of safe travel but also actively discovering new tourism content to further revitalize domestic travel."
