[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Busan will be on sale for 17 days. Along with the nationwide Donghaeng Sale, a massive sale event featuring Busan’s local brands will kick off on the 26th.

From June 26 to July 12, Busan City will hold the “Korea Donghaeng Sale & Busan Brand Festa” for 17 days in conjunction with the government’s Donghaeng Sale.

The Korea Donghaeng Sale is a large-scale nationwide discount event held for 17 days, organized by the government, local governments, and public-private sectors to recover consumer demand shrunk by the COVID-19 pandemic and to revitalize the domestic economy.

Participants include major companies in distribution sectors such as home appliances, automobiles, department stores, and large marts, as well as online shopping malls, traditional markets, and small business owners.

Considering the COVID-19 situation, the event will be conducted mainly online, with on-site events held sequentially in six hub cities selected through a nationwide contest, including Busan, Daegu, Jeonju, Cheongju, Changwon, and Seoul, while maintaining social distancing in daily life.

Busan City has combined not only the government’s Donghaeng Sale but also Busan’s unique content such as local product sales, consumption, and tourism. By adding the “Busan Brand Festa” to the “Korea Donghaeng Sale,” it plans to maximize the synergy of consumption boom through various linked events.

A large number of local companies will participate in this event. Industry associations (organizations) such as the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Busan Employers Federation, Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business, and Busan branch of the Korea Foodservice Industry Association, as well as all regional economic entities including districts and counties, will unite, with about 40,000 companies in sectors like food service and beauty participating.

The main event, “2020 Korea Donghaeng Sale in Busan,” will be held for three days from June 26 to 28 at Exhibition Hall 1 of BEXCO in Haeundae. Through 12 unmanned promotional booths from 60 companies, the event will operate Donghaeng Sale theme zones such as the “Donghaeng Sale Promotion Hall,” the “Brand K Promotion Hall” promoting products from small and medium manufacturers, and the “Let’s Value Promotion Hall” promoting and exhibiting products from small business owners. Additionally, the “Live Station” will host online event auctions and promotional video screenings for local products.

To create synergy for stimulating consumption, the “Busan Brand Festa” will be held at the same time and place (BEXCO). About 160 companies with 176 booths will promote and sell excellent local products. Visitors can find Busan-specialized products all in one place through events such as the Busan Shoes Special Sale, Busan Beauty Day, Social Economy Enterprise Good Sales, Local Specialty Seafood and Fishing Village Product Sales, Busan Representative Tourism Souvenir Sales, Busan Excellent Food Sales, Air Travel Exhibition, and joint purchasing consultations with public institutions.

Besides BEXCO, nine offline discount events will be held at 48 regional hubs including traditional markets and the Busan Cinema Center, featuring joint marketing, free markets, Hi Summer pop-up stores, Nonghyup fresh agricultural product discount sales, and the 2020 Busan Food Film Festa, allowing consumers to enjoy the festival throughout Busan.

Also, a “Good Sales, Good Consumption, Culture & Tourism Festival” program that all citizens can participate in and enjoy anytime and anywhere will be operated throughout the Donghaeng Sale period.

In connection with the Donghaeng Sale, Haeundae-gu will be operated as a “Special Discount Pilot Area.” Until July 21, about 1,000 businesses throughout Haeundae-gu will offer up to 50% discounts on accommodations, shopping, food, and performances.

With active cooperation from shopping districts and industry associations (organizations) across Busan, about 40,000 local businesses of various sizes in cafes, craft beer, food service, beauty, and hairdressing will participate in this discount event.

Participating companies will receive “Donghaeng Sale Participation” stickers produced by Busan City to inform citizens.

Busan City will also hold cultural service discount events such as free operation of museum and art gallery special exhibitions, free admission to children’s cinemas, and discounts on English experience programs at the Global Village.

The tourism industry, which is facing a severe crisis due to COVID-19, will seek to turn the tide through accommodation discount exhibitions, city tour ticket discounts, and discount promotions at major tourist attractions such as Busan Tower. Along with this, the ongoing “Good Consumption, Good Sharing” campaign relay will be intensively operated during this period.

Byun Seong-wan, Acting Mayor of Busan, said, “This event was planned so that all economic actors including producers, consumers, and public and private sectors can smile and enjoy, and furthermore to revive the local economy in crisis.” He added, “We expect this to be an opportunity to revitalize the depressed local economy atmosphere and awaken citizens’ economic activities.”
