Seoul City Invites 5 Renowned Architect Teams for International Place Name Contest
Final Works Selected on 26th via Digital and Non-Face-to-Face Video Review
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Seoul City will build the 'Seoseoul Museum of Art' in Geumcheon-gu in 2023 as a landmark building representing Seoul through innovative designs by world-renowned architects. It will be the first public art museum in the southwestern area of Seoul and a branch of the Seoul Museum of Art.
The city announced on the 25th that the design plan for the Seoseoul Museum of Art will be prepared through an 'International Design Competition' involving five teams: two overseas teams and three domestic teams, selected through a public operation committee.
The Seoseoul Museum of Art will be a municipal art museum established in Geumcheon-gu, where cultural facilities are relatively lacking. It will be built as a 'museum in the park' within Geumnarae Central Park near Geumcheon-gu Office, with a total floor area of approximately 7,000㎡.
The competition includes participation from famous architects such as Liu Jiakun, one of China's top three architects; Roger Riewe, active in Germany and Austria; Min Sung-jin, who designed the 'Hilton Namhae Golf & Resort,' selected as 'Korea's Best Resort' for three consecutive years; Kim Chan-jung, noted for experimental forms and materials through projects like 'Cosmos Resort'; and Choi Wook, known for delicate architecture such as the 'Gapado Culture and Arts Creation Space.'
Considering the COVID-19 situation, the final selection judging on the 26th will be conducted via non-face-to-face video conference. The judging will be done by reviewing drawings on digital panels and large screens installed at the Urban Architecture Center digital judging room within Donuimun Museum. Video cameras will be set up on-site to broadcast the judging room situation in real time to overseas participants and judges. Overseas participants and judges will connect to a cloud-based video conferencing system to watch the broadcast from the judging room and participate in presentations and evaluations.
The entire judging process will be live-streamed from 1 PM on the YouTube channel 'Urban Space Improvement Team,' allowing anyone interested to observe.
The judging panel consists of five experts. Considering the feature of a 'museum in the park,' Professor Niall G. Kirkwood, a landscape architecture professor at Harvard GSD, is invited to focus on the landscape architecture aspect. Domestic judges include Professor Lee Chung-ki from University of Seoul, Son Jin (Ison Architects), Wi Jin-bok (UIA Architects), and Lee So-jin (Atelier Lyon Seoul).
The final winning design will be announced on the 30th, and the winning team will be granted priority negotiation rights for the basic and detailed design contract.
