From this year, a monthly 20,000 KRW Veterans' Honor Allowance will be paid along with consolation money during holidays and Veterans' Month... Honoring and supporting the living stability of veterans, their bereaved families, and other national veterans beneficiaries
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Chang-woo Lee) announced on the 24th that starting this year, it will provide both the national veterans' honor allowance and consolation money together to national veterans.
The veterans' honor allowance is a system that supports a certain amount of money to honor and improve the welfare and living stability of national veterans, including those who sacrificed and contributed for the country's independence, protection of citizens' lives or property, and the development of South Korea's liberal democracy, as well as their bereaved families or relatives.
Since 2018, the district has abolished the age limit for the veterans' honor allowance, and in 2019, it removed the requirement to have continuously resided in Dongjak-gu for more than one year, providing a monthly veterans' honor allowance of 20,000 KRW to all national veterans.
In particular, until last year, the consolation money paid during holidays such as Lunar New Year, Chuseok, and Veterans Month was not paid in conjunction with the veterans' honor allowance, but through an ordinance amendment, starting this year, consolation money of 20,000 KRW will also be paid together with the veterans' honor allowance.
The veterans' honor allowance and consolation money can be applied for by visiting the local community service center of the applicant's address, and payments will begin from the month of application upon selection as a recipient.
For more details, inquiries can be made to the Welfare Policy Division or the respective community service center.
Last year, the district paid a total of over 400 million KRW in veterans' honor allowances to about 20,000 national veterans and provided over 250 million KRW in consolation money to about 12,500 recipients.
Additionally, on the 25th, the district will pay combat veterans' honor allowances and living assistance allowances to 1,636 combat veterans and national veterans.
Among them, 1,484 combat veterans and recipients of the Order of Military Merit aged 65 or older who have resided in Seoul for more than three months will receive a combat veterans' honor allowance of 100,000 KRW, and 152 veterans among the national veterans who are basic livelihood security recipients or belong to the lower-income bracket will receive a living assistance allowance of 100,000 KRW. However, veterans receiving either the combat veterans' honor allowance or the living assistance allowance cannot receive overlapping payments of the veterans' honor allowance and consolation money.
Yoo Won-sik, head of the Welfare Policy Division, said, "In celebration of the June Month of Patriots and Veterans, we will do our best to widely spread a culture of respect and honor for those who have dedicated themselves to the country and to improve the welfare of veterans."
Last year, the district held an event to attach 'National Veterans Nameplates' to about 1,400 national veterans residing in the area to express gratitude for their sacrifice and dedication.
