[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu] Recently, as the flight frequency of the special reconnaissance aircraft Guardrail (RC-12X) operated by the US Forces Korea (USFK) over the Korean Peninsula has increased, interest in the intelligence capabilities of the USFK has grown.

According to the aircraft tracking site 'No callsign' on the 23rd, one Peace Eye airborne early warning aircraft of the Republic of Korea Air Force, one US Air Force reconnaissance aircraft Rivet Joint (RC-135W), and six USFK reconnaissance aircraft Guardrail (RC-12X) conducted surveillance flights against North Korea.

The USFK reconnaissance aircraft belong to the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade under the US Eighth Army, which is responsible for intelligence on North Korea. The 501st Military Intelligence Brigade is composed of five battalions: the 3rd Military Intelligence Aviation Reconnaissance Battalion, the 532nd Military Intelligence Battalion, the 719th Military Intelligence Battalion, and the 368th Military Intelligence Battalion.

The 3rd Military Intelligence Aviation Reconnaissance Battalion operates intelligence collection aircraft RC-12 'Guardrail' and RC-7. It is the only unit in the US Army that operates both RC-12 and RC-7 simultaneously.

The RC-12 is an aircraft that collects SIGINT (Signals Intelligence), providing real-time target information to units conducting operations on the battlefield, thereby maximizing operational efficiency. The RC-7 collects COMINT (Communications Intelligence) and IMINT (Imagery Intelligence). Like the RC-12, it provides real-time information to support field commanders in accurately understanding the battlefield situation as if looking at the palm of their hand. The information collected by the RC-12 and RC-7 is sent to the 3rd Military Intelligence Aviation Reconnaissance Battalion, where it undergoes collection and analysis before being reported to the command.

The 532nd Military Intelligence Battalion is responsible for collecting and analyzing Indications and Warning (I&W) intelligence. Its primary mission is to detect provocation signs from subtle movements of North Korean forces, enabling combat units to respond immediately. HUMINT is also handled by the 532nd Military Intelligence Battalion. With the establishment of the 524th Military Intelligence Battalion under the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade, the HUMINT analysis function of the 532nd Battalion was transferred. During wartime readiness exercises such as Key Resolve (KR) and Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG), the 532nd Battalion directly supports the USFK Command and the ROK-US Combined Forces Command with intelligence.

The 719th Military Intelligence Battalion performs an important role by collecting and analyzing not only tactical-level but also strategic-level intelligence in close cooperation with the Republic of Korea military and reporting to the command. This unit, which also provides intelligence on North Korea to the US Indo-Pacific Command and the US mainland, was first deployed in Busan on June 25, 1951. It moved to Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek in March 1970, was reorganized as the 751st Military Intelligence Battalion, and reclaimed its original name, the 719th Military Intelligence Battalion, in October 2009.

Additionally, the 368th Military Intelligence Battalion is a reserve unit headquartered in California, USA. It mainly handles counterintelligence and Information Electronic Warfare (IEW) to disrupt enemy intelligence activities. Based on the activities of these subordinate units, the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade plays a key role in producing useful intelligence for all types of operations conducted by the USFK on the Korean Peninsula, contributing to victory. The 501st Military Intelligence Brigade is a traditional unit that has carried out intelligence collection and analysis missions in the Korean theater since arriving in Busan on June 25, 1951, one year after the outbreak of the Korean War. To enhance its intelligence collection and analysis capabilities, the brigade regularly participates in USFK exercises and also conducts regular training such as the 'Arirang Sentinel' exercise involving intelligence units under the US Indo-Pacific Command.

The 501st Military Intelligence Brigade consists of low-altitude reconnaissance aircraft (ARL), Guardrail General Reconnaissance Aircraft (GRCS), Air Reconnaissance Support Team (ARST), counterintelligence and human intelligence 'Go Team,' Deployable Intelligence Support Element (DISE), and Mobile Support Team (MST).

The 'Go Team' is a special team activated during the armistice period or wartime, conducting basic unit protection activities as well as prisoner of war interrogation, refugee screening and interrogation, and counterintelligence investigations. Notably, the 'Go Team' is known to have significantly contributed to US military victories by acquiring various intelligence through forward operations such as pre-infiltration before and during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars and reflecting it in operations.

Also, DISE is a special team concept that provides various information requested by combat commanders on the battlefield, while ARS, GRCS, and ARST are core to the rapid intelligence collection capabilities using aerial assets possessed by the 501st Brigade.
