[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Hyundai Rotem has secured an additional 40 train cars for the 수도권광역급행철도 (GTX) Line A, making it the manufacturer of all 160 train cars for the line.
On the 22nd, Hyundai Rotem announced that it had recently won an additional order for 40 train cars worth approximately 119.2 billion KRW for the Samsung-Dongtan 광역급행철도 (Express Railway) from the Korea Rail Network Authority.
Earlier, in March, Hyundai Rotem had secured a contract worth 345 billion KRW from SG Rail, the project operator of GTX Line A, to supply 120 train cars for the GTX Line A.
The newly manufactured 40 cars, to be produced at the Changwon factory, will be deployed on the 83.1 km section with 10 stations between Unjeong Station in Paju City and Dongtan Station in Hwaseong City. Each train set consists of 8 cars, with a maximum operating speed of 180 km/h and a passenger capacity of 1,090 per set, matching the specifications of the previously ordered 120 cars.
GTX is a metropolitan express railway connecting the outskirts of the Seoul metropolitan area with downtown Seoul. The railway is constructed at depths below 40 meters underground, allowing for a straighter route and faster operation compared to existing subways.
Based on its experience in domestic and international metropolitan railway vehicle supply projects, including this recent order, Hyundai Rotem plans to compete for future orders of train cars for other lines such as GTX-B and GTX-C.
Since 2011, Hyundai Rotem has secured orders for over 8,000 metropolitan railway vehicles, including 138 ITX-Saemaeul train cars in 2011, 240 suburban train cars for S?o Paulo, Brazil in 2013, 554 double-decker train cars for Sydney, Australia in 2016, 520 train cars for Taiwan Railways in 2018, and the 160 GTX Line A train cars ordered this year.
A Hyundai Rotem official said, “Following the order for 120 cars in March, securing the additional 40 cars means we have won the entire contract for the train cars to be deployed on GTX Line A. We will deliver high-quality vehicles to ensure the stable operation of the first GTX trains on Line A and strive to secure additional projects.”
