National Technical Qualification Applicants and Holders Increase by 12%...Middle-Aged and Older Adults Utilize for Retirement Preparation

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The number of applicants and passers of the national technical qualification exams increased by approximately 12% each compared to the previous year. This is a significant rise compared to the usual increase rate of less than 3% in previous years.

The Human Resources Development Service of Korea published the "2020 National Technical Qualification Statistical Yearbook" on the 22nd, which contains statistics on national technical qualification exams and passers from 1975 to 2019.

This statistic is a government-approved annual report prepared since 1984 to contribute to manpower supply and demand policies by industry sector and to provide useful information to those preparing for national technical qualifications.

According to this year's statistical yearbook, the number of applicants and passers of the 2019 national technical qualification exams increased significantly compared to the previous year.

The number of applicants totaled 3,910,679, and the number of passers totaled 773,704, both increasing by about 12% compared to the previous year. This is a noteworthy figure compared to the 2015-2018 period, which showed an increase rate of less than 3%.

In particular, the number of national technical qualification passers aged 50 and over, the middle-aged and elderly group, reached 87,018, nearly doubling compared to 44,949 in 2015.

Looking at the most obtained certificates, among those in their 50s, the order was forklift operator technician (8,497), Korean cuisine cooking technician (6,010), excavator operator technician (5,053), waterproofing technician (2,694), and architectural painting technician (2,561).

For those aged 60 and above, the order was forklift operator technician (1,932), landscaping technician (1,445), excavator operator technician (1,244), Korean cuisine cooking technician (1,024), and waterproofing technician (1,015).

As society enters an aging era, it appears that the middle-aged and elderly before and after retirement mainly obtained license-type qualifications for economic retirement preparation and social participation.

Kim Dong-man, Director of the Human Resources Development Service, said, "I hope the statistical yearbook will be usefully utilized by everyone interested in national technical qualifications," adding, "We will continue to operate national qualification exams efficiently and establish an evaluation system suitable for industrial field demands to strengthen the credibility of national qualifications."

Meanwhile, the National Technical Qualification Statistical Yearbook provides statistical data not only on the status of national technical qualification exams and passers but also on passers by age group and the most applied-for categories. It can be downloaded through Q-Net, the national qualification information website.
