[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] Jindo County, Jeollanam-do announced on the 16th that the first harvest of Plumcot, which was distributed to farms as an alternative crop to Jindo green onions and offers the simultaneous taste of both plum and apricot, has begun.
Park Jong-yong's farm (Eungdeok-ri, Uisin-myeon, Jindo County), now in its third year of Plumcot cultivation, shipped its first commercially viable Plumcot this year.
Approximately 8 tons are expected to be harvested from 1,800 pyeong this year, and it is currently being sold at 15,000 KRW per kilogram.
Mr. Park Jong-yong, a Plumcot farmer, said, "Cultivation is not difficult," adding, "The trees grow well even in relatively poor growing conditions and are more resistant to pests and diseases than plums or apricots."
'Plumcot' is a hybrid word combining Plum, meaning plum, and Apricot, meaning apricot, designed to complement the weaknesses and maximize the strengths of both fruits.
Jindo-grown Plumcots, cultivated in soil with a high sand content that provides good drainage, are resistant to pests and diseases, large and heavy at 80 to 100 grams, and have a high sugar content of 14 to 17 Brix.
In particular, Plumcot offers the sweetness of apricot and the fragrant juice of plum, allowing consumers to enjoy both flavors simultaneously.
It also contains large amounts of vitamins A and C, and studies have shown that its antioxidant substances, such as anthocyanins, are superior compared to other fruits.
An official from the Jindo County Agricultural Technology Center stated, "Plumcot, which takes advantage of the strengths of plums and apricots, is being developed as one of the alternative crops to green onions and is expected to lead to increased income for farmers as a new niche crop."
