[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads centered around the Coupang Bucheon logistics center, kindergartens, elementary, middle, high schools, and special schools in Bupyeong-gu and Gyeyang-gu districts of Incheon, which had been conducting remote classes, will start in-person classes from the 11th.

The Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 10th that this decision was made in consultation with the Ministry of Education, based on the judgment of Incheon health authorities that the COVID-19 outbreak originating from the Bucheon logistics center is gradually being controlled and cases of community infection in the area are decreasing.

When confirmed cases occurred consecutively centered around the Coupang logistics center, the Office of Education instructed 243 schools in Bupyeong-gu and Gyeyang-gu, geographically close to Bucheon, to conduct remote classes from the 28th of last month, excluding the third-year high school students.

Ko Gwangpil, Deputy Director of the Incheon Infectious Disease Control Support Group, stated, "Currently, the situation in Incheon is considered better compared to Bucheon," and added, "Since Bucheon is also scheduled to start in-person classes from the 11th, if strengthened social distancing rules are followed and thorough disinfection is maintained within schools, schools in Bupyeong and Gyeyang districts of Incheon can also conduct in-person classes."

Do Seonghun, Superintendent of Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education, said, "We decided to resume in-person classes respecting the health authorities' opinion that the community infection starting in Bucheon has calmed down," and added, "We will continue to maintain vigilance and closely cooperate with the Ministry of Education and Incheon health authorities to create a safe educational environment."
