Gangdong-gu Big Data Portal Self-Developed... Seoul City Creativity Award Winner

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) won the Excellence Award in the '2020 Seoul Creative Awards Innovation Policy Category' for the self-development of the 'Gangdong-gu Big Data Portal (hereinafter GBP)'.

In response to the new era environment such as the 4th Industrial Revolution, the district expanded and reorganized the Electronic Information Division into the Smart City Promotion Team in July last year, established a Big Data Team, and has been striving to realize data-driven scientific administration and lay the foundation for a smart city.

In particular, the GBP, which was self-developed and has been operating since January this year, demonstrated its achievements by winning the Excellence Award in the Innovation Policy Category of the Seoul Creative Awards. GBP is a system that collects public data produced by Gangdong-gu, builds a meta-information database, and enables easy integrated search and automatic analysis through the district's homepage.

As of June 2020, it provides a total of 1,326,785 cases of 269 types of public data, including population statistics (total, by gender, elderly, etc.), CCTV status, locations of public restrooms, subways, and evacuation facilities. All data are provided as visualized materials such as automatic aggregation and automatic charts so that they can be visualized in numbers and images. Yearly trends are also provided, making it possible to use them as objective indicators to predict future changes.

GBP was developed directly by specialized district office staff, saving development costs worth hundreds of millions of won, and it is evaluated to have greatly improved data accessibility and work efficiency by supplementing the problem of local governments' public data being separately managed by each institution such as the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Statistics Korea, and Seoul City.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “The self-development of GBP has made access to public data much easier for residents and staff. We will continue to strive to improve residents' right to know and convenience of life through administrative innovation based on big data.”
