[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Reports have emerged that U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to sign a bill sanctioning human rights abuses against the Muslim Uyghur population in China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region.
On the 8th (local time), The New York Times, citing sources, reported that President Trump plans to sign the bill that passed the House last month. However, the exact timing of when President Trump will sign the bill has not yet been disclosed.
This could further exacerbate U.S.-China tensions caused by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the enforcement of the Hong Kong National Security Law.
China has strongly opposed this bill. The Chinese Embassy in the U.S. has repeatedly issued statements calling the bill a serious interference in China’s counter-terrorism efforts and internal affairs, stating that "China firmly opposes (the bill)."
The embassy further urged, "The United States must immediately correct its mistakes and stop interfering in China’s internal affairs regarding the Xinjiang region, and not continue down the wrong path."
