[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Min Jun-young] Comedian Lee Sang-jun revealed family matters he had never spoken about before.
On the 8th, SBS Plus variety show 'Are You Eating Well?' featured comedians Kim Yong-myung and Lee Sang-jun.
During the broadcast, host Kim Soo-mi asked Lee Sang-jun, "Are both your parents still alive?"
Lee Sang-jun confessed, "My father was not around since I was young. I don't even know what he looks like. I was so young that I don't even remember when he left."
Kim Soo-mi asked again, "Why didn't your mother tell you about it?"
Lee Sang-jun said, "I was afraid it would make her sad, so I never asked my mother. As time passed, I missed the chance and couldn't bring myself to ask even as I got older. My sister seems to know everything, but from what I heard from relatives, it seems like it was a traffic accident. Even among comedian colleagues, if such topics come up, we tend to avoid them," he revealed.
He added, "When I was young, I felt ashamed because I couldn't fill in the father's occupation section on school notices. During breaks, I could feel my friends watching and talking. I wondered if they were talking about me. I used to sit alone in a corner thinking about that."
He then shared a story about feeling sorry for his mother.
He said, "My mother never came to my graduation ceremony even once. I was the one who didn't let her come. When I was in elementary school, I told my mom not to come. I was going to a friend's house whose parents both worked, and we were going to eat Jajangmyeon, so I told my mom not to come. Right after the graduation ceremony, we ate Jajangmyeon at my friend's house," he said.
He continued, "When I became an adult and stayed at a friend's house, I happened to see a graduation photo where my mother was standing," and shed tears.
On that day, at the hosts' request, Lee Sang-jun made a phone call to his mother.
Lee Sang-jun's mother said, "He thought of me a lot and never asked about his father or talked about him at all. I went to his graduation once but couldn't give him a bouquet. Maybe because his father wasn't there, I didn't go afterward so as not to hurt my son's feelings," she said.
When Lee Sang-jun apologized, his mother said, "I have never felt hurt. I'm happy you grew up well. I love you," she said.
