[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] On the 6th, the United Future Party stated, "On the occasion of the 65th Memorial Day, we pray for the eternal rest of the patriotic martyrs and national heroes who sacrificed for the country, and extend our deepest condolences to their bereaved families," adding, "We will do our best to uphold their noble spirit and set the Republic of Korea on the right path."

United Future Party spokesperson Bae Jun-young said in a statement that day, "The Republic of Korea is currently facing a precarious crisis," and added, "The economic losses and social chaos caused by the COVID-19 shock are endless, and North Korea's provocations and successive military actions have reached an intolerable level."

Spokesperson Bae criticized, "The government has consistently taken a humiliating submissive stance toward North Korea, which threatened to nullify the military agreement over the voluntary pro-North propaganda by defector groups. The government said it would respond firmly not to North Korea but to the people, even holding an unprecedented briefing and stating that related legislation was being prepared. Furthermore, the Minister of National Defense led the claim that Hambakdo, officially South Korean territory, belongs to North Korea’s jurisdiction, and the Board of Audit and Inspection has even reaffirmed this."

Bae added, "The government invited the bereaved families of COVID-19 victims to the Memorial Day ceremony but did not invite the bereaved families and survivors of the First and Second Battle of Yeonpyeong, the Cheonan ship attack, and the Yeonpyeong Island shelling, who risked their lives to protect the country despite North Korea’s armed provocations. Only after public criticism was the attendance of bereaved families and representatives of surviving soldiers decided a day before the event. We cannot help but ask the government if they intend to even divide the national heroes."

Spokesperson Bae said, "If this is not a betrayal of the patriots who gave their lives for the country and its people, then what is it? The country that the national heroes tried to protect, the enemies they fought against, and the facts and meanings of these events must neither change nor be allowed to change."
