[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 5th that it has started operating two city bus routes, ‘May Bus’ and ‘100-Year Bus’.
‘May Bus’ and ‘100-Year Bus’ are themed routes that tour major attractions and historical event sites in Gwangju.
First, the ‘May Bus’ departs twice a week from U-Square (Gwangju Intercity Bus Terminal) at 1 PM on Fridays and 9 AM on Saturdays, following locations where traces of the May 18 Democratic Uprising remain, recreating the historical memories that the new generation must never forget.
The ‘100-Year Bus’ allows passengers to tour Gwangju’s major attractions on a specially designed bus.
In particular, an engaging guide introduces Gwangju’s history through performances. It departs every Saturday at 1 PM from U-Square (Gwangju Intercity Bus Terminal).
Starting from the 13th, four circular bus routes will operate: three regular routes?‘Mudeungsan Geological Attraction Tour,’ ‘Jeondang District Cultural Tourism Tour,’ and ‘Bitgoeul Namdo Tour’?and one reservation route, the ‘Experience Tourism Content Tour.’
The Mudeungsan Geological Attraction Tour departs from Songjeong Station at 9 AM on Saturdays and Sundays, featuring a course where visitors can experience the region’s nature and culture, including Hwasun Red Cliffs, Lake Ecological Park, and traditional performances at Hwanbyeokdang.
The Jeondang District Cultural Tourism Tour departs from Songjeong Station at 9 AM and 2 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, allowing visitors to explore key tourist spots such as Yangnim-dong Historic Cultural Village, the National Asia Culture Center, and enjoy performances at the Gongyeonmaru stage, covering Gwangju’s core attractions in half a day.
The Bitgoeul Namdo Tour departs from Gwangju Station at 9 AM, visiting Songjeong Station, Wolbong Seowon Confucian Academy, Hampyeong Natural Ecology Park, Yeonggwang Baekje Buddhism’s First Arrival Site, and the Baeksu Coastal Road.
In this regard, the city held a collaborative meeting chaired by Kim Jun-young, Director of the Culture, Tourism, and Sports Office, with about 20 participants including representatives from nearby local governments, merchants from 1913 Songjeong Market, and officials from the National Gwangju Science Museum, which are major stops on the city tour, to exchange opinions.
They also shared ideas on how to utilize each tourist site, including developing and selling souvenirs featuring Gwangju’s cultural tourism character Omaena, photo-taking props, guide signs, and city tour bus wrapping.
Gwangju City plans to incorporate the discussed contents from the meeting into future city bus operations.
