Jeonbuk Province Closes Military Death Accident Reinvestigation Applications "September 13, Don't Forget~"

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Gominhyeong] As the deadline for submitting requests for reinvestigation of unjust deaths in the military approaches in about 100 days, those involved are urged to be cautious.

According to Jeonbuk Province on the 4th, the deadline for submitting petitions for the reinvestigation of military death incidents, promoted by the Presidential Military Death Incident Truth Commission (hereinafter referred to as the Commission), will end on September 13, 2020.

The subjects of the petitions include all types of death incidents that occurred in the military from November 1948 to September 2018, not only suspicious deaths with unclear causes but also accidents, illnesses, and self-harm deaths.

In particular, following the 2014 amendment of the Military Personnel Act, cases of self-harm deaths caused by unit-related factors such as assault, harsh treatment, or excessive workload during military service are recognized by the state as ‘duty-related deaths,’ allowing bereaved families who lost loved ones in the military to actively submit petitions and receive assistance.

Applications can be submitted by filling out the application form on the Commission’s website and then sending it by mail, visiting in person, email, or fax.

A provincial official said, “Since only three months remain until the Commission’s petition deadline, we hope that bereaved families do not miss the opportunity to apply due to time constraints.”
