[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] On the 4th, Park Yang-woo, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, visited the National Library for the Disabled in Seocho-gu, Seoul, to inspect online non-face-to-face services for the disabled to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). He also reviewed the progress of the National Library for the Disabled, which is being promoted to a first-level affiliated institution of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and discussed support measures.
On the day, Minister Park checked the 'Chaeknarae Service' for physically disabled people with mobility difficulties, electronic braille materials converted according to the type of disability from printed materials, the online original text system for sign language video books, and the real-time video sign language consultation system. Through video sign language consultations, he also confirmed complaints from hearing-impaired users regarding library services.
The National Library for the Disabled was promoted to a first-level affiliated institution of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on this day, according to the revised 'Library Act' of 2019. Going forward, it will establish and oversee national policies for library services for the disabled.
Minister Park urged, "I ask the National Library for the Disabled to effectively promote information welfare policies for the disabled and contribute to resolving the digital information gap and information blind spots."
