Come Taste Delicious Deondeul Watermelon by the Seomjin River in Gurye

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yuk Mi-seok] Watermelon is one of the representative summer fruits, consisting of 94% water, which helps relieve thirst commonly felt during the hot summer, and it is gaining attention as a low-calorie diet food.

According to Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do on the 4th, watermelon harvesting is in full swing in Deondeul by the Seomjin River. Gurye watermelon is cultivated in the fertile sandy soil along the Seomjin River and in a climate with a large temperature difference between day and night, resulting in higher sweetness and superior aroma compared to watermelons from other regions, making it increasingly popular in the watermelon market.

Currently, 43 farms in Deondeul, Gurye, cultivate watermelons in 23 hectares of greenhouse facilities, generating an annual income of 1 billion KRW. Among them, 17 eco-friendly farms cover 9.1 hectares, and the number of farms and cultivation area are planned to be continuously expanded. In the long term, new technologies aimed at reducing labor and improving quality will also be applied.

Gurye watermelons are harvested from mid-May to early July. They are shipped to wholesale markets in Gwangju, Suncheon, and Yeosu, and supplied to eco-friendly school meals and iCOOP cooperatives. The total production volume is 1,132 tons.

Although there were many difficulties in watermelon growth due to abnormal temperatures in April this year, production has recovered to average levels based on the experience and know-how of watermelon farmers.

Watermelon farmers in Muncheok-myeon and residents of Hwayang Village plan to hold an experiential event titled "Taste Watermelon and Visit Snails!" in Hwayang Village from the 20th to the 28th. Various programs will be offered, including watermelon stealing experience, creating a breeding environment for giant snails, and an art exhibition at the Hwayang Village Cheok Gallery.
