Yeonggwang-gun Advances Water Supply and Sewerage Projects Including Clean Water Provision

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeon Seong] Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim Junsung) announced on the 4th that it will promote various water supply and sewage projects to enhance residents' welfare by improving living conditions through stable and clean tap water supply and expansion of public sewage treatment facilities.

Since 2017, the county has been carrying out a local water supply modernization project with a total budget of 44.9 billion KRW over six years until 2022, including replacing aging water pipes and establishing a block system to provide clean water and improve residents' hygiene and welfare. The current progress rate is 45%.

This year, aging water pipes in the Daesinji district of Yeonggwang-eup will be replaced, and once the modernization project is completed, the water retention rate will improve from 55% to 85%, saving 1.8 million tons of water annually and reducing the budget by 2.8 billion KRW, which is expected to contribute to the enhancement of the county's financial capacity.

Also, within this year, in connection with the water supply modernization project, a system to monitor real-time inflow and outflow of water in the water supply and sewage office will be established to improve response capabilities in case of pipeline leaks, thereby providing residents with stable and clean tap water.

Along with this, the county is progressing with the Yeonggwang No. 2 Water Purification Plant improvement project.

Since its completion in 1986, nearly 40 years have passed, making facility upgrades for clean tap water supply urgently needed.

Accordingly, the water purification plant improvement project was selected as a pledge project of the 7th local government administration, and to secure project funds, Governor Kim Junsung and responsible officials have repeatedly visited the National Assembly and central government departments to explain the necessity of the project and have diligently prepared for the national subsidy application.

As a result, the county achieved the valuable outcome of being selected for the Ministry of Environment's aging water supply maintenance contest this year.

From this year until 2023, over four years, a total of 22 billion KRW will be invested, with 11 billion KRW each from national and county funds. A non-stop construction plan will be established to ensure smooth water supply in Yeonggwang-eup during construction. The Yeonggwang No. 2 Water Purification Plant improvement construction will begin in October and proceed step by step.

Once the local water supply modernization project and the Yeonggwang No. 2 Water Purification Plant improvement project are completed, water quality will be further improved, enabling residents to safely drink clean water.

The Yeonggwang-eup sewage pipeline maintenance project, aimed at preventing environmental pollution caused by aging sewage pipelines and suppressing odor generation to improve residents' living environment, has been underway since 2016. Over six years until next year, a total of 42.7 billion KRW will be invested to maintain 33 km of sewage pipelines, with a current progress rate of 41%.

A county official stated, "We plan to continuously promote the establishment of a stable clean water supply system and the expansion of public sewage treatment facilities."
