[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Korea Radioactive Waste Agency announced on the 4th that it signed a 'Large Underground Structure Operation and Monitoring Technology Agreement' with the Korea National Oil Corporation at the corporation's headquarters meeting room in Ulsan.
Since 2018, the two organizations have shared site characteristic data and operational technologies. Through this agreement, they decided to expand their cooperation scope to safety and environmental fields.
By establishing a technological cooperation system, the two organizations will share expertise in ensuring the safety of large underground structures, efficient monitoring of groundwater, and management of the surrounding environment.
The agency has been operating a low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility at a depth of 80 to 130 meters underground since 2015.
The corporation has operated an oil storage base for about 40 years.
It possesses various specialized technologies such as monitoring groundwater changes around the base, safe facility operation, and environmental management around related facilities.
Chairman Cha Seongsu of the agency stated, "We will do our best to ensure the safe operation and efficient monitoring of the radioactive waste disposal facility by cooperating in various fields such as groundwater change monitoring and education."
