[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] LG Uplus is partnering with the US company Enreal to launch the world's first AR (Augmented Reality) glasses in the third quarter of this year. Unlike existing virtual reality (VR) devices that are large, heavy, and uncomfortable to wear, the AR glasses can be worn like regular glasses and weigh only 88g, making immersive experiences in the 5G era more accessible.

According to LG Uplus on the 4th, starting from the 8th of this month, LG Uplus will offer opportunities to directly experience the AR glasses "Enreal Light," scheduled for release in the third quarter, beginning at 24 stores nationwide. The experience stores and locations can be checked on the LG Uplus official website event page. At these stores, customers can wear the AR glasses and view high-resolution multimedia content on screens larger than 100 inches through a 360-degree UX. They can also use services that allow viewing various information simultaneously by changing the size. Additionally, users can try an immersive AR zombie game in real space and use multiple apps such as YouTube and Facebook simultaneously.

In line with the untact era brought on by the spread of COVID-19, an online app development seminar for AR glasses will also be held. It will be available for real-time participation via Allshow TV from 10:30 AM for one hour on the 5th, and free registration is possible on the official website. The first session of the seminar will introduce the AR glasses launched by LG Uplus, explaining the concept, configuration, and various services that can be realized through the AR glasses.

The second session will provide information about the SDK and developer kit that allow developers to freely create applications using the AR glasses. Song Dae-won, Executive Director of Future Devices at LG Uplus, said, "Existing AR glasses have been difficult for general customers to access due to high prices, heavy weight, and content limitations. We plan to commercialize the 'Enreal Light,' which improves these aspects, as the world's first B2C product." He added, "We will help small and medium developers easily understand the AR glasses commercialized by LG Uplus and provide opportunities to develop apps and commercialize their businesses."

LG Uplus's recent move reflects attention to the growth potential of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in the post-COVID-19 era. As the untact industry gains popularity due to the spread of COVID-19, services combining VR and AR are gradually becoming more advanced. The immersive content industry shows potential in various fields due to its high compatibility with other industries such as online education, gaming, and entertainment. According to the Ministry of Science and ICT, the global immersive content market is expected to grow from 33 trillion won in 2017 to 411 trillion won by 2023, with an average annual growth rate of 52.6%.
