[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] The 'Steel Day (June 9)' ceremony, the biggest event in the steel industry, has been canceled due to concerns over the resurgence of COVID-19. This is the first time in 20 years that the Steel Day commemorative event has been canceled.

Steel Day was established to commemorate the day on June 9, 1973, when South Korea (POSCO) first produced molten iron in a modern blast furnace. The Korea Iron & Steel Association has held a ceremony every year, inviting key figures from the industry and government to discuss major issues.

This year, the Steel Association considered downsizing the event, but after the COVID-19 infections originating from Itaewon clubs spread to a mass infection at the Bucheon logistics center, they decided to cancel it altogether. However, the government award ceremony will be conducted individually by contacting only the awarded companies.

A representative from the Steel Association said, "This is a large event attended by government officials and the steel industry, but due to signs of COVID-19 resurgence in Seoul and the metropolitan area, we decided not to hold it this year. The government awards will be conducted individually after the 15th."
