Geumcheon-gu, Library Resident Writer Support Project Underway

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) will promote the ‘2020 Library Resident Writer Support Project’ at Malgeunnuri Small Library from June to December. The ‘Library Resident Writer Support Project’ places professional writers in residence at 41 public libraries nationwide to operate literary programs for local residents, creating demand for literature in the community. This is the fourth year of the project, hosted by the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and sponsored by the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation.

Malgeunnuri Small Library received 21 million KRW in national funding through the ‘2020 Library Resident Writer Support Public Contest Project’ and hired writer Kim Seong-jin as the resident writer. Kim is the author who won the grand prize at the 2012 Changbi Good Children’s Book Contest with “How to Use Mom.”

Malgeunnuri Small Library plans to conduct programs such as ‘Reading with the Writer Uncle’ for daycare children, ‘Youth Reading Class’ for middle and high school students, ‘Library Traveler’ for adults, ‘Life Writing Class’ for seniors, as well as ‘Original Illustration Exhibition,’ ‘Book Concert,’ and ‘Meet the Author’ events with writer Kim.

Located on the 5th floor of Siheung 1-dong Community Center, Malgeunnuri Small Library operates culturally diverse programs such as ‘Korean Language Mentoring for Children of Immigrants’ and ‘Gather Around the Global Village,’ family programs for all ages, and age-specific programs. It has received great responses from users by inviting famous writers who are hard to meet locally, such as Yoo Seol-hwa, Chae In-seon, and Jeong Eun-sook, to hold book concerts and author meetings.

Malgeunnuri Small Library is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed on weekends and public holidays. Currently, it is temporarily closed until June 14 to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “We hope that through the resident writer support project, residents can experience literature in various ways,” and added, “We will continue to operate diverse reading culture programs that allow local residents to build literary literacy, using small libraries as a base.” For more information, please contact Malgeunnuri Small Library or the Culture and Sports Division of Geumcheon-gu Office.
