Dongdaemun-gu Actively Operates Taxpayer Protection Officer... Leading Efforts in Handling Taxpayer Complaints and Protecting Rights

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yu Deok-yeol) is actively operating the ‘Taxpayer Protection Officer’ system this year as well, following last year, to resolve taxpayers' grievances and protect their rights.

The Taxpayer Protection Officer is a Grade 6 public official who has performed local tax duties for more than 7 years and helps resolve issues when taxpayers are subjected to illegal or unfair local tax impositions.

Specifically, the Taxpayer Protection Officer handles ▲grievance complaints and consultations related to local tax payments ▲protection of rights concerning tax audits and delinquent tax dispositions ▲matters related to the extension and postponement of tax audit periods.

In October 2018, the district enacted and announced the ‘Ordinance on the Handling of Taxpayer Protection Affairs in Dongdaemun-gu,’ and to ensure fair and objective relief of rights, placed the Taxpayer Protection Officer in the Audit Department rather than the Tax Department, officially starting operations in 2019.

The Taxpayer Protection Officer can request the head of the tax department to ▲correct or temporarily suspend illegal or unfair dispositions ▲stop illegal or unfair tax audits ▲provide explanations for unclear grounds of disposition ▲request inspection and submission of taxation data.

Yu Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “Since last year, many residents have resolved their local tax grievances through the Taxpayer Protection Officer system. We hope that more residents will utilize this system to protect their rights, and our district will continue to perform customer-centered administration to realize a more trusted tax administration.”
